GCMS Celebrates Pike Excellence in a Powerful Way
Guion Creek Middle School is using its bulletin boards to show students what is possible by highlighting Pike Excellence. The school's theme this year is "We Grow Academic Excellence."
The school's librarian, Valerie Dennis, shared, "I wanted to use our community space to highlight that Pike has an extended history of excellence.
As I worked on this project, I realized that although each person has taken a different path, their stories create a larger conversation about the qualities that help people make an impact. Together, these individuals remind our students that success can look many different ways—and that their own stories are still being written.
I hope our students see more than just successful Pike graduates and community members on these boards. I hope they see examples of people who faced challenges, embraced who they are, cared for others, and found their own paths.
Together, these stories share a message with our students: Be curious. Be compassionate. Celebrate differences. Create belonging. Be yourself. Believe in yourself. Keep going.
We absolutely love this initiative and look forward to sharing each of their wonderful displays throughout the coming weeks.

Germaine "B Swift" Russell — Class of 2002
"You didn't make me, so you can't break me. Young people, bet on yourself."
B Swift is a well-known Indianapolis DJ, the music and energy behind Pacers and Fever games, and one of the city's ultimate hype men. Most importantly, he is also a Guion Creek alum (who was inducted into Pike High School's Alumni Hall of Fame)!
His message encourages students to believe in their own abilities and recognize the power they have within themselves.

The Pike Red Zone Food Pantry is incredibly grateful for a generous donation from University United Methodist Church totaling $3,565.56. The donation included hygiene products, food, and comfort items to support our students.
Principal Wolley and Pike High School Social Worker Tammy Coe attended the church service on Sunday, August 16, where the donation was presented by Rev. John C. Russell and the University United Methodist Church.

Friday Night Lights!
Our Pike Football Family will take on Zionsville at 7:00 p.m. in this evening's home opener.
Gates will open at 6:15 p.m. and close after the 2nd quarter.
Spectators who do not arrive before the end of the 2nd quarter will not be admitted - even if tickets were purchased in advance (no refunds).
No backpacks.
Students MUST present a valid Pike or Zionsville Student ID at the gate.
An attending adult must accompany students in grades 8 and below.
Students from schools other than Pike and Zionsville will not be permitted entry to this evening's game unless accompanied by an attending adult (no refunds will be issued).
No tailgating or loitering in the parking lots after the game begins. Lots will be patrolled.

This week, Pike High School welcomed Mr. Matt McCarroll, who will serve as the school's Co-Athletic Director.
In his welcome message, which Principal Wolley shared via the corresponding graphic, Mr. McCarroll wrote:
"Hello Pike community! My name is Matthew McCarroll, and I am the new Co-Athletic Director at Pike High School. I am excited for the opportunity to serve Pike High School!
I received my Bachelor of Science in Sports Management & Marketing from Bowling Green State University and my M.S in Coaching Pedagogy from Ohio University.
I am the former Associate Athletic Director - Internal Operations at Indiana University Columbus. Prior to that, I was a school administrator and coached football at Depauw University, Marian University, and Butler University.
I attended Pike schools and grew up 10 minutes from Pike High School. I am excited to come back home and get to work! My wife and I have a daughter and are excited to immerse ourselves in the community.
I am thankful for the opportunity to serve Pike Township! Go Red Devils!"
Pike High School Performing Arts Calendar
The Arts Are Essential in Pike
The arts are an essential part of any well-rounded education, and exposure to arts education benefits learners of all ages. In fact, numerous studies have shown that arts education is closely linked with positive academic outcomes and social and emotional development.
In Pike Township, students at all levels attend performances at our Pike Performing Arts Center and have the opportunity to participate in visual art and music classes. At the elementary school, art and music are part of each grade level's weekly schedule rotation. At the middle school level, students have the opportunity to take band, orchestra, choir, and a visual arts class.
Our Pike High School Performing Arts Department is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the state, with five concert bands, two jazz bands, six orchestras, eight choirs, numerous theatrical groups, a winter drum line, a winter guard, a pep band, a marching band, and a dance team.
Our Visual Arts Department is just as diverse, allowing students to explore their own artistic skills through sculpture, paints, ceramics, dimensional design, photography, jewelry, and other media in a stimulating and challenging environment that encourages students to develop their creative and scholarly potential.
Our Pike High School Tennis team recently took their third annual trip to the Cincinnati Open, the oldest professional tennis tournament in the United States still played in its original city. The tournament, which spans 2 weeks, showcases top international tennis stars, with this year's expanded fields featuring 96 singles players and 32 doubles teams for men and women.
Coach Villafuerte shared, "We often talk as a team about the strategies and skills we can learn from professional players, so attending one of the highest-level tournaments in the world just a couple of hours away has turned into a special tradition where we geek out on tennis while also bonding as a team."
Our Boys Tennis team is off to an amazing start this season, with a 5-0 sweep over Ben Davis in their season opener. On Tuesday, they celebrated a 3-2 victory against North Montgomery, which featured a 3-hour, three-set thriller from CJ Freeman, and on Thursday, they walked away from their home opener against Lebanon with a 4-1 win.
You can catch them in action at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, August 22nd, when they host Western Boone.
2026 Sisterhood Basketball Camp
Our Pike High School Lady Red Devils are thrilled to announce that former WNBA player and Pike High School Class of 2001 standout Nina Stone will serve as the Lead Trainer for our 2026 Sisterhood Basketball Camp!
This is a unique opportunity for young girls to learn from one of Pike's all-time greats. Nina competed at the highest level of basketball and is returning home to share her knowledge, passion, and experience with the next generation of players.
Whether your daughter is just beginning her basketball journey or wants to continue developing her skills, this camp will focus on fundamentals, confidence, teamwork, leadership, and having fun in a positive environment.

Swim Lessons: Group and Private lessons are available for beginners as well as advanced swimmers. Ages 4+.
Group Lessons: Monday and Wednesday from 5:15 to 7:00 p.m.
Private Lessons: Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m.
Pike Township Swim Club
We offer competitive swim programs and a fun and supportive atmosphere for all ages. A brief evaluation is required to join the swim club. The winter swim season starts in September, but you can join anytime. Contact Head Coach Charles Grace at cgrace@pike.k12.in.us to schedule an evaluation.

State Law - SB 78
Indiana Senate Bill 78 requires every public school and charter school in Indiana to adopt a wireless communication device policy that restricts student use of cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, gaming devices, and similar devices for the entire school day — not just during instructional time. This is often called a “bell-to-bell” policy.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR CHILD:
Building on our district’s “Power Down for Success” initiative, student devices will be stored as follows during the school day:
Elementary School: Designated classroom location
Middle School: Locker
High School: Backpack
Devices should be powered off before the school day begins and may be used again after dismissal.
