New State Law (SB 78) - Wireless Communication Device Expectations
Infographic detailing wireless communication device expectations for the 2026-27 school year at Pike Township Metropolitan School District.
Beginning with the 2026–27 school year, all Indiana school districts are required to follow a new state law (SB 78) regarding student personal wireless communication devices, which includes: Cellphones, Smartwatches, Tablets, Personal laptops for personal use, Gaming devices, and  Meta Glasses during the school day.

In alignment with this law, our district will implement a “storage model” for all students' personal devices.

This means:
  • Cell phones and devices that include smartwatches, tablets, personal laptops for personal use, gaming devices, Meta glasses, etc., must be powered off
  • Personal Communication Devices must be stored based on the school level attended (high school - backpack, middle schools - locker, elementary schools - designated location)
  • Personal Communication Devices may not be accessed during the school day, including lunch and passing periods
If you need to contact your child during the school day, please call the school office, and we will ensure communication is delivered promptly.

Additional details, including school-specific procedures and expectations, will be shared later this summer.

Thank you for your partnership as we work to support focused learning environments for all students.
