Pike High School Educator Highlights Student Success

As part of his Master's Coursework, Carson Krutz, who teaches math, serves as the Academic Coach for Pike Football, and recently graduated from our district's Leadership Academy, crafted a newsletter to highlight the accomplishments of six members of the Class of 2026 and showcase how Pike High School is preparing students for their "next door" - be it enrollment, enlistment, or employment.

Please find Mr. Krutz's wonderful project below:

In Pike Township, our mission is to “cultivate a diverse, innovative learning environment by opening doors of opportunity for students to achieve their maximum potential.” As we approach graduation, we are beginning to see evidence of this mission in action through the diverse paths our seniors have chosen.

By balancing academic rigor with hands-on experience, Pike High School ensures every graduate is prepared for their “next door.” We recognize that each student’s educational journey is unique. Whether our graduates are pursuing higher education, entering the workforce, or enlisting to serve our country, the foundation they built has set them up to be successful in the future. By prioritizing both academic rigor and hands-on experience, our staff at Pike High School ensures that every Pike student is prepared for their "next door,” be it Enrollment, Enlistment, or Employment.

We are proud to spotlight six seniors who embody these pathways and demonstrate how our school community prepares leaders for every sector of society. Each student shared how their experiences at Pike High School have shaped their journeys and prepared them for their lives after graduation. To provide a full picture of our seniors' success, we have highlighted two students from each of our primary pathways: Enrolling in a college or university, Enlisting in the military, and Employment in the workforce.

Soha Rao | Enrolling: Indiana University-Bloomington

Soha Rao is headed to Indiana University-Bloomington on a full-ride scholarship, where she looks forward to majoring in neuroscience. When asked about the specific experience at Pike that helped her reach this great accomplishment, Soha referenced the impact of student leadership, “Being part of Key Club at Pike played a big role in preparing me for my next step. Mrs. Slavkin and Ms. Tiernan, our club sponsors, put so much time and effort into supporting us and helping the club grow, and they honestly don’t get enough credit. Through their guidance and the opportunities they created, I was able to build leadership and communication skills that I know will stay with me moving forward.

Camara Lee | Enrolling: Indiana State University

Camara Lee is headed to Indiana State University, where she will major in elementary education. When asked about the specific experiences and programs at Pike High School, Camara mentioned receiving help from Ms. Stephanie in the Community Resource Room (CRR), “Ms. Stephanie was so much more than a tutor in the CRR. She was able to find an open door for me when I thought they were all closed. By talking with Ms. Stephanie, I was able to apply and be accepted to attend Indiana State University.”

Cooper Askelson | Enlisting: U.S. Air Force

Cooper Askelson has enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and will be joining as an All-Source Intelligence Analyst. His duties will involve conducting threat analysis and intelligence reports for air, space, cyberspace, and special operations. When asked about the preparation he received at Pike, Cooper credited the specialized support from Pike’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program: “Pike NJROTC has helped me by preparing me for the ASVAB test, which gave me the opportunity to join the U.S. Air Force.”

Jada Riggins | Enlisting: U.S. Air Force

Jada Riggins will be enlisting in the U.S. Air Force after graduation. She is an active member of the Pike’s NJROTC program. When asked about the preparation she received at Pike, Jada referenced the specialized support from the NJROTC instructors: “Pike NJROTC has helped me with enlisting in the Air Force both literally and mentally. The class has shown me resilience in times it's not the easiest. Also, Master Chief Hall always has been there to ensure my enlistment goes as smoothly as possible. Overall, NJROTC has brought clarity and understanding to who I want to be as an adult.”

Elijah Gamble | Employment: Barbering

Elijah Gamble will be pursuing a career as a barber after graduation. He is excited to take online courses in entrepreneurship to start his own barber shop. When asked about the preparation he received at Pike, Elijah credited his experience in barbering and the business classes at Pike: “I was prepared in multiple ways at Pike. One main thing that prepared me was taking a business class with Mr. Jackson. This helped me learn the fundamentals of starting a business. Another teacher that has had a big impact on my preparation is Ms. Gilmore. Through talking with her about the barbering business, I learned how to make a profit off cutting hair and other services. I look forward to taking an online entrepreneurship course, which can help me start my own shop to better showcase my skills after high school.”

Christian Lopez | Employment: Barbering

Christian Lopez will be pursuing a career as a barber after graduation. He looks forward to applying the real-world skills he learned at Pike as he joins the workforce. When asked about the preparation he received at Pike, Christian credited Pike's barbering program as a whole: “The barbering class at Pike High School provided a lot because I was able to learn many things that I didn’t know about barbering. This program gave me hands-on experience and confidence that prepared me for my future opportunities in the barbering industry. This has also helped me with real-world skills in haircutting, grooming and professionalism.”
