Textbook Adoption

K-5 Parents:

On May 4, 2023, Indiana state law changed with the passing of the House Bill 1558. The law states that beginning with the 2024-2025 school year, school districts: (1) shall adopt curriculum or supplemental materials for reading that are aligned with the science of reading and to the student's reading proficiency; and (2) may not adopt curriculum or supplemental materials for reading that are based on the three-cueing model. 

At that time, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) began initiating specifications on how the law would be implemented in schools.  The IDOE then conducted a review of vendor-submitted curricular materials to identify those aligned with the science of reading.  On February 9, 2024, the Department of Education issued  a list of high-quality materials approved for the reading curriculum.

Since that time, Pike has been seeking guidance and clarification pertaining to expectations regarding the reading adoption.  The K-5 Reading Adoption was scheduled to occur during the 2024-25 school year. However, based on our understanding of the expectations at this time regarding the implementation of a qualified reading curriculum aligned to the science of reading, we need to expedite the reading adoption process.  While our initial plan, like other districts, aimed for a timely approach to the process, we must now shift to a more accelerated strategy.

Approved reading vendors recently presented materials to a committee of teachers and we are now seeking feedback from the broader school community.   Each elementary will have samples of the reading materials during the week of May 20 - May 24.  The Pike Administration Services Center will also offer open sessions for community review of the curriculum materials under consideration on May 21, 2024 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. and May 22, 2024 from 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. For those individuals and families who are unable to attend one of the two in-person review sessions, we have included some demo accounts for you to access these resources online.
