Spence is currently in his 22nd year of coaching (coached on two state championship teams) and brings more than 30 years of wrestling experience to the Pike High School wrestling program. He grew up in Indianapolis and attended Lawrence North High School where he brought home state runner up and state championship titles. In addition to his state success, he also earned multiple championships in USA freestyle wrestling. He has coached multiple state place winners and champions in addition to national All Americans. Spence went on to continue his wrestling career at Grand Rapids Junior College where he competed for one year before joining the military.
Spence is still a student of the sport. To ensure that he stays current on the latest wrestling trends and techniques, he immerses himself in the sport by attending clinics and tournaments and watching technique videos. In addition to Pike, Spence is also a coach for the Indianapolis “Beat the Streets” inner city Freestyle Program where he gets to work with the top wrestlers in the Indianapolis area.
What excites him most about wrestling is the mental toughness it takes to go out on the mat and compete. He is a motivated coach that understands the importance of academics and the role wrestling can play in the development of life long skills and strengths. What he finds most satisfying about coaching is being able to give back to the sport and being a positive role model for student athletes through the sport of wrestling.
