Academic Eligibility for Participation in Sports

New Standards, Policies, and Practices  in Place for Start of 2010-2011 School Year.

Ø MSD of Pike Township will require student-athletes in grades 6 – 12 to maintain at least a 2.0 GPA.

Ø Study tables, tutoring, and academic coaching will become available for middle school students participating or wishing to participate in interscholastic sports.

Ø Student-athletes not meeting the grade standards at the beginning of a six-week grading period will be placed on an initial six-week academic probation period. During this probation period, students may practice with a team, but may not participate in any contest. Interventions and monitoring will be provided to students on athletic probation. Student-athletes may be required to attend study tables, tutoring, or meetings with academic coaches for all or part of the daily athletic practice time. Those student-athletes whose grades rise to meet grade standards after 3 weeks will be granted full participation status, but will remain on academic probation. At the end of a six-week grading period, those student-athletes whose six-week report card grades meet grading standards may be fully released from academic probation and its accompanying sanctions.

Ø Those student-athletes who still do not meet grading standards at the end of the six-week probation period may be placed on a second academic probation, and all academic sanctions will continue.

Ø Student-athletes who do not demonstrate adequate and appropriate progress toward meeting grading standards after two academic probation periods will be removed from participation on any school athletic team and will be referred to school-wide academic counseling programs.
