National Science Foundation’s LSAMP Scholars
The Pike Pre Collegiate Initiative program is proud to announce that Pike students, Yamiley Alphonse, Kaia Moody, Ruth Obadeyi, have been awarded LSAMP Scholarships from Texas Southern University. LSAMP is an academic excellence program designed for outstanding high school students who are interested in pursuing degrees in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. This scholarship is sponsored and funded by the National Science Foundation.
IU Simon Summer Research Program
With only 9 spots open for the summer, Pike’s Pre Collegiate Initiative program is proud to announce that current Pike students Maya Smith and Jamel Walker along with Pike graduates Sarah Shado (Texas Southern University) Kelsie Kimbrough and Ariana Black (Tuskegee University) and Jordan Lyles-Holly (Hampton University) have been selected to participate in the 2019 Simon Summer Research Program (SRP). The program is designed to increase the number of high school and undergraduate students from underrepresented populations pursuing biomedical and behavioral science careers by providing firsthand exposure to these fields. During the eight-week program, the students will be paired with a mentor and work on laboratory-based, computer-based and clinical research projects. At the end of the program, the students will present their findings as well as give an oral presentation.
Indianapolis Professional Association’s Academic Achievement Awards
The mission of INDIANAPOLIS PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION (IPA) is to promote and develop the education and economy of African-Americans and to encourage others to do so. On May 18th, IPA recognized the academic achievements and accomplishments of our community’s best college-bound students from local high schools and academies. Each student received a $500 book award for college. Since 1987, IPA has honored more than 650 local high school scholars with awards. The Pike Pre Collegiate Initiative program nominated Pike senior’s Maya Smith and Christaan Durham who were recipients of this year’s award.
Dr. Alvin V. Blount Merit Scholarship
Pike’s Pre Collegiate Initiative program that focuses on working with America’s historically black colleges and universities is proud to announce the 2019 recipient of the Dr. Alvin V. Blount Merit Scholarship is Pike senior Makyia T. Wykle. North Carolina A&T University makes the award, it is the No. 1 producer of engineering degrees on the undergraduate level awarded to African-Americans. When making the selection for this annual scholarship, which covers all expenses related to college, the scholarship committee considers such attributes as scholarship, leadership, community service, exceptional talent, and financial need.
