The Pike Planetarium
The planetarium is a 62-seat facility with handicapped accessibility and is located on the south side of the high school building, in E114.
Within this 30-foot domed room, concepts of astronomy and space science are correlated with disciplines and topics such as chemistry, biology, physics, navigation, legends and folklore, mythology, and past and future exploration of new worlds. The unique architecture, mechanics, and technology of the planetarium make it possible to illustrate and appreciate many facets of science, history, and literature in a manner feasible only at the planetarium. The planetarium’s facilities are adaptable for viewers of all ages and interests. Hearing impaired visitors can utilize our new adaptive technology to enhance the visit.
The Pike Planetarium is available for after school and evening programs for Pike Township groups and patrons. Contact the Planetarium Director for scheduling.
A planetarium lesson for K-12 classes may be viewed as a necessary extension of the classroom activities, relating to many types of learners and presenting information in a way not possible in the traditional classroom. Planetarium lessons are correlated to the Indiana Academic Standards and can assist in documenting the fulfillment of the standard(s). Collaboration between the planetarium director and the classroom teachers ensures a targeted presentation. All planetarium lessons involve some level of active learning by the students. Pre- and post-activities can also be developed, based on teacher requests and student needs.
