11-12-20  MCPHD Order - Transition to Virtual Learning

Pike Family,

As you are most likely aware, we have continued to see an alarming rise in the number of COVID-19 cases and the positivity rate throughout much of the county, state, and country. Today, Dr. Virginia Caine, the Director of the Marion County Health Department, ordered that schools move to remote instruction no later than November 30th. Dr. Caine encouraged schools transition even sooner if possible, as she is no longer confident she can keep schools open safely due to the level of community spread we are experiencing.

All MSD of Pike Township Schools will shift to remote/virtual instruction on Monday, November 23rd. We will use the next week to help students prepare, allow families to make arrangements, pick up medication and belongings, and distribute instructional materials. Throughout the duration of the order, which is currently set to expire on January 15th, we will continue to provide opportunities to pick up free meals for any child 18 or under and re-open our Pike Learning Pods. The Learning Pods will be available during scheduled school attendance days throughout the duration of all COVID-19 related building closures to provide families who need it with an affordable childcare option. To reserve a spot for your child to participate in our Learning Pods, which are open to Pike students in grades K-6 for $20 a day from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., please call Loving Care at (317) 388-7836 or email ngbilins@pike.k12.in.us.

Although we received promising news about a potential vaccine this week, the reality is that the best protection we have is still wearing a mask, social distancing, and good hand hygiene. This is especially important as the weather turns colder and we head into the holiday and cold and flu season.

Now, more than ever, we desperately need your help to keep our schools and our community safe. Please wear a mask, practice social distancing, wash your hands, monitor your health, and stay home if you are sick.

We understand that this poses significant challenges for many of our families and staff members. We will continue to provide frequent updates, adhere to local and state health department guidance, and do everything we can to prioritize health, safety, and wellbeing.

10-26-20 Update for in-person learners at the middle school level

Pike Families,

The COVID data for Marion County has increased beyond our 5.4% Back to School Plan threshold for two consecutive Mondays. As a reminder, the data is always 1 week behind. For Monday, October 12th the average positivity was 6.3% and 6.9% for October 19th. Please note that the COVID data may change slightly over time due to more test results being received.

We will return to the hybrid model at all of our middle schools for our in-person students until the positivity rate is at or below 5.4% for at least two weeks effective Monday, November 2, 2020. Cohort 1 students with last names that start with A-J will attend on Monday and Tuesday. Cohort 2 students with last names that start with K-Z will attend on Thursday and Friday.
Please note that Tuesday, November 3, 2020 is an e-Learning day for all of our students and no one will attend school in person.
Please continue to wear a mask, wash your hands, and practice social distancing. We thank you for your continued support and encourage you to contact your child’s school directly with any questions or concerns.

10-20-20 - Fall Break & Free Meal Update

Pike Family,

All Pike schools will observe fall break beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, October 21st – Friday, October 23rd.

  • Chartwells will distribute free meals for any child 18 and under from 3 to 7 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, October 21st, behind the Pike Freshman Center, 6801 Zionsville Road. Each meal pack contains 5 breakfasts, lunches, and suppers. This week’s menu includes a gallon of milk, cereal, EZ Jammers with string cheese, chicken nachos, grilled chicken sandwiches, applesauce, raisins, and fresh produce. Children do not have to be present and ID is not required.

  • If you have not already done so, please remember to select the method of instruction (in-person or virtual) for your child for second semester in Skyward. If you select the virtual option for your child, they will participate in remote learning via Canvas and Zoom. If you select the in-person option your child will attend school in-person whenever district, county, and state metrics allow. Selections, which will be considered semester long commitments, must be made by no later than November 6th. (You should have received an email earlier today that contained directions and additional details).

  • Middle School Learning Schedule - our in-person learners at the middle school level recently moved from a hybrid schedule to a full week of attendance. Unfortunately, since that time, the positivity rate in Marion County has continued to increase. Yesterday marks the first week that the positivity rate exceeded the 5.4% metric established by our school board. If the rate is above 5.4% again next Monday, October 26, our in-person learners will transition back to hybrid instruction on Monday, November 2nd. Middle school families will receive another update next Monday.

  • Please wear a mask, social distance, and continue to follow CDC recommendations over fall break to keep yourself, your family, and our community safe.

  • There will be no Facebook Live this evening.

Please take care, be well, stay safe & have a wonderful fall break! We look forward to welcoming our wonderful students and staff back on Monday, October 26th.

Always,

#PikeProud

10-8-20 Update for In-person Middle School Families

Pike Families,

Please know that we are watching the data closely as we prepare to welcome all of our middle school in-person learners back for a full week of instruction on Monday, October 12th. At this time, unfortunately, we are seeing a rise in positive COVID-19 cases in Marion County. The positivity rate, which rose from 4.5% on September 21st to 5.2% on September 28th, is currently still below our 5.4% board approved district threshold. If the data for Marion County should increase beyond our 5.4% threshold for two consecutive Mondays, we will return to the hybrid model at all of our middle schools until the positivity rate is at or below 5.4% for at least two weeks.

Please continue to wear a mask, wash your hands, and practice social distancing. We thank you for your continued support and encourage you to contact your child’s school directly with any questions or concerns.

Family Update - 9-29-20

Pike Family,

Facebook Live:

Dr. Flora will host a Facebook Live this evening, Tuesday, September 29th at 6:30 p.m.

Middle School Schedule Transition:

On Friday, Dr. Virginia Caine, Director of the Marion County Health Department, announced that due to Marion County's current positivity rate, middle school students may resume full week in-person attendance. For Pike, this means that if the data remains within the metric range approved by our school board and you selected the in-person attendance for your middle school student, on Monday, October 12th, your child will transition from their current hybrid schedule to attending school in-person Monday thru Friday.

We ask that you plan for this transition accordingly and watch for additional information later this week. Should you have any questions in the meantime, please contact your child's school.

Free Meal Pick up:

Please visit the Pike Freshman Center between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, September 30th, to pick up 5 free breakfasts, lunches, and suppers for any child under the age of 18. Children do not have to be present and ID is not required.

November 3rd – eLearning Day:

Important Information – 7/24/20

Pike Family,

On the evening of July 23, 2020, the School Board decided, out of caution for our students and staff with the rise in COVID-19 cases in Marion County, that all MSD of Pike Township schools will start on August 11, 2020 with remote or virtual learning until at least Labor Day. The current COVID-19 positivity rate in Marion County exceeds 10%, and we have seen the number of infected people increase since the beginning of July. Yesterday, Mayor Hogsett and Dr. Caine, added more restrictions to activity in Marion County in hopes of pushing the positivity rate down below 10%. We will continue to monitor COVID-19 data each week and consult with the Marion County Public Health Department throughout the month of August. Marion County data will be used, with the following metrics, to determine when to bring students back for face to face instruction to include:

In person instruction will begin after Labor Day when the COVID-19 positivity rate is at or below 10% over a 7 day average as compared to the number of people tested in Marion County.

o    Elementary schools will begin in-person instruction if the COVID-19 positivity rate is 10% or lower. If the metrics are met, students will attend in-person instruction on Schedule A. Schedule A is in-person instruction full time with all students.
o    Secondary schools will follow Schedule B until the positivity rate is 5% or lower over a 7 day average compared to the number of people tested. Schedule B divides students into two cohorts attending in-person, two days a week and remote instruction 3 days a week per cohort. All students will receive 5 days of instruction from the same teacher.

This was not a decision made lightly or without considerable reservation, as the board fully realizes how valuable in-person instruction is and how much families rely on schools.

Because our ultimate goal is to welcome students who opt to return to our buildings to in-person instruction as soon as we can safely do so, it is still important to complete the 2020-21 Return to School Form prior to the end of the day, Monday, July 27, 2020. Further, please remember that the commitment choice is for the entire semester.

We will continue to provide free curbside meal distribution, counseling, and support services. Next week, you will receive details about the process for borrowing a device for learning purposes if your child needs one and designated staff members will be available to help identify internet connectivity solutions. In addition, we will share information about how the school day will be structured and the ways in which our educators will work to ensure that your child’s educational and social emotional needs are met.

If you have not already done so, please login into Skyward via your Family Access account to access  and complete the Return to School Form. Currently, the district is making decisions based on enrollment therefore your information is vital for our planning.

Please contact your child’s school if you need assistance with accessing your Family Access account, completing the Return to School Form, or the registration process. As you know, all students must be registered for the upcoming school year.

We understand the impact that this has on our students and the considerable hardships so many families are facing. We are committed to seeking creative solutions and continued support. Please reach out if you need assistance.

Paso 3 – Haga clic “Ver”

Estamos comprometidos a buscar soluciones creativas y soporte continuo. Comuníquese si necesita ayuda.

5-29-20 Update - 4:42 p.m. - A Message from Dr. Flora

Pike Family,

This week has been exceptionally hard for our country. Many of us have been overwhelmed by feelings of heartbreak, horror, helplessness, hopelessness, and righteous anger as we have watched and witnessed incidents of state violence against Black men and women. The diseases running rampant throughout our country are disrupting our lives and hurting us all. However, COVID-19 and Systemic Racism have an outsized, devastating, and at times deadly effect on Black people and communities of color. This is in a large part due to the existence and preservation of intentional systems that protect privilege and uphold inequity.

I believe you must acknowledge a problem to address it. The ugly, incendiary, and pervasive racism that underpins the American experience has claimed countless Black lives, taken an immeasurable toll, and exacted an inexplicable amount of energy to simply live, let alone survive while Black. This is immoral and unacceptable.

As a white woman, I will never truly be able to comprehend the levels of pain, anger, frustration, and fear that members of the Black community are feeling. I understand that is a privilege, and that my feelings in regards to these matters must be secondary, not centered. It is incumbent upon me to recognize that I have a responsibility to actively work to name and dismantle the various conditions that have led to this suffering in order to better society and realize the promise of our people and the values we purport to hold dear.

I must understand that these problems are societal and that this is personal. To be silent is to be complicit and I refuse to be complicit. I know that I have a lot to learn. I want you to know that I am here to learn, listen, and do whatever I can to help change the things that we can and will not accept.

We love you, we miss you, and we are here for you. We are so very sorry for the pain and grief you may be feeling. Please reach out if you need help.

It is truly an honor to serve our wonderful community. Please stay safe, be well, and take some time to unplug, and recharge this weekend if you are able.

“I’m no longer accepting the things I cannot change…I’m changing the things I cannot accept.” - Angela Davis

With love,
Dr. Flora

May 13, 2020 - 5:12 p.m.

Pike Family,

Today, Mayor Hogsett announced that on Friday, we will begin the process of observing a more restrictive version of the Stage 2 of the Back on Track Indiana plan. WTHR has a story with additional details posted:

https://www.theindychannel.com/news/coronavirus/marion-county-to-enact-some-phase-two-reopening-plans-starting-friday-many-restrictions-remain

Marion County COVID-19 Data:

The threat of being infected by COVID-19 has not lessened. In fact, in our area, we have continued to see daily increase in positive cases.

  • The decision to reopen was based at least partially on the availability of ICU beds and ventilators.
  • The demographics of our community make us especially vulnerable.
  • As of yesterday, there were 7,632 identified positive cases and 429 deaths in Marion County.
    • Our neighbors in Hendricks County had 984 cases and 55 deaths. Cases in Hamilton County were similar with 956 cases and 84 deaths. In Johnson County there were 840 cases and 91 deaths. For most other counties in the state, the number of positive cases reported has been much, much lower - https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/2393.htm
  • As of last week 86% of the critical care beds in Marion County were in use.
  • Public health experts have advised against large gatherings of any kind.
  • Although practicing social distancing, using face coverings when in public, and regular hand washing helps lessen the likelihood of infection, it does not eliminate it.
  •  As much as we wish it were not the case, until we have effective treatment or a vaccine, the virus will dictate what we can do and when.
  • Under the best case scenario, it appears that the earliest large gatherings may be permitted in our area is late July.

We frequently receive questions about when families may be able to pick up their child’s belongings from school. We frequently receive questions about when families may be able to pick up their child’s belongings from school. Because we are currently still under a stay at home order and guidance which limits gathering sizes, we are unable to allow access to our buildings at this time. Please know that when we are able to do so, we will develop and communicate plans for students to collect their things in the safest manner possible.

Stay at Home Order:

Due to the high concentration of and significant daily increases in positive COVID-19 cases, Marion County and Indianapolis will remain under a stay at home order and essential travel restrictions until at least May 15th.

Please stay at home if you are able to do so and be sure to continue to practice social distancing, wash your hands, and consider wearing a face covering in public.

Pike Family,

As we shared last week, the Stay at Home order for Marion County and Indianapolis was extended until May 15th, meaning that our area will remain in Stage 1 of Governor Holcomb’s Back on Track Indiana Plan. Because we continue to see an significant increase in COVID-19 cases in our area, we encourage you to continue to practice social distancing, consider wearing a mask or face covering when in public, and to stay home if you are able to do so. Resident’s may call 1-888-634-1123 for information about being tested for COVID-19 if they are experiencing possible symptoms or have had contact with someone who has tested positive.

May 1, 2020 - 4:30 p.m.

Pike Family,

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Throughout the last several weeks, Dr. Flora has encouraged us to focus on what we can do. With that in mind, we may not be able to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week in the ways in which we have become accustomed, but we can express sincere appreciation and immense gratitude for our amazing educators, who have truly gone above and beyond to serve and support our students.

Many of our fabulous parent groups have communicated  great ways to celebrate their school’s teachers with their families. Whether you are participating in those fun initiatives, or doing your own thing, we would love to share your teacher appreciation with the community via our social media channels. If your child or your family makes a sign, writes a note, records a video, draws a picture, or thanks their teacher in some other wonderful way, please let us know by tagging us or using our #PikeProud hashtag on Twitter or Facebook posts. If you are not on social media, but would like us to share your kind words and/or testimonials, please email them to pthotline@pike.k12.in.us.

April 23, 2020 - 7:21 p.m.

Pike Family,

Yesterday, we were profoundly saddened to learn that Indiana basketball legend and beloved Pike Family member Coach Ed Siegel passed away from the coronavirus.

Our hearts are with the Siegel family and the countless Red Devils, friends, former colleagues, and basketball fans mourning the loss and celebrating the life of this special man.

It is impossible to put into words how much Coach Siegel meant to Pike High School, our storied basketball program, and most importantly, the students he served. His contributions span decades and his influence spans generations.

Although many of our students may not be familiar with Coach Siegel, they have and will join us in celebrating the success of a basketball program he helped build, and at Pike High School, they will spend time in a gym named in his honor.

We are unspeakably grateful for Coach Siegel's dedication to Pike schools and incredibly fortunate that his life's work and enduring legacy is so inextricably linked to our Pike Pride, Tradition, and Excellence.

Census

The census provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers, and many others use to provide daily services, products, and support for you and your community. Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on census data.

The results of the census also determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives, and they are used to draw congressional and state legislative districts.

April 8, 2020 - 5:30 p.m.

Pike Family,

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in Dr. Flora’s first Facebook Live last evening. (If you missed it, you can still view it via our district Facebook page). Her next Facebook Live will be next Tuesday, April 14th, at 6:30 p.m. If you would like to submit questions in advance or have topics you would like to suggest, please feel free to email them to pthotline@pike.k12.in.us.

Dr. Flora received several wonderful questions. She responded to several questions during the chat and via the comments. We are in the process of creating a FAQ and responding to any questions that were not covered.

One of the most common questions was about when families will be able to pick up instruments and/or visit their child’s school to collect belongings. The answer is that, unfortunately, at this time, it is not possible to allow access to our buildings; however, we will share details with you as soon as we are safely able to do so.

She also reiterated that although we would love to be able to provide answers to questions about events such as prom, graduation, and summer school, we are simply unable to do so at this time. However, as soon as we have the information needed to begin making those decisions, we will share it with you.

As we continue the process of providing remote learning opportunities, questions and concerns are sure to arise. We encourage you to reach out to your child’s teachers and/or school principal. Our educators are here to support you and sincerely want to stay connected with their students and families.

COVID – 19:

As you know, last week, Governor Holcomb announced that our school buildings would be closed for the remainder of the school year. Today, Governor Holcomb extended his Stay at Home order until April 20th and closed state parks. At this time, Marion County remains under a warning level advisory, which allows essential travel only. The CDC also updated their recommendations and now suggest that people should wear masks in public.

Social distancing is hard on kids, but doctors say no to playdates:
https://t.co/rtyEkAIOTD?amp=1

Your health and well-being is our top priority. For that reason, we will not be able to allow building access at this time. As soon as it is safe for us to do so in a responsible manner, we will share those plans with you.

As much as we would like to, we are also unable to answer questions about graduation. Although we are committed to celebrating our incredible Class of 2020, it is impossible to say when that will be and what that might look like.

We cannot overstate how serious this is. Please stay at home if you are able, practice social distancing, wash your hands regularly, stay informed, and follow the guidance of medical experts. We are all adjusting to difficult circumstances over which we have very limited control. We thank you for your understanding and ask for your continued flexibility as we all strive to support our community, meet the needs of our students, take care of our staff, and serve our families in the best possible manner.

April 2, 2020 - 7:20 p.m.

Pike Family,

Today was hard. We learned that our buildings will be closed for the rest of the 2019-20 school year at the same time you did. Although we know that it is the right decision, and that we can stop the spread and save lives by staying home, it doesn't mean that this isn't really sad and a lot to process for all of us.

There are many things happening very quickly, which means that there are some requests we cannot responsibly grant and some questions, that as much as we would like to, we cannot answer right now. Sadly, that includes decisions regarding graduation and details regarding when we will be able to safely allow access to our schools. We know that this uncertainty is difficult, but during this crisis, circumstances are truly outside of our control.

Please know that we are completely committed to serving our families and doing what is best for our students at all times. We will continue to do everything we can to provide support and meet the needs of our students, staff members and their families. Keeping our students and staff safe is our highest priority and will be at the center of everything we do.

We will follow our remote learning schedule for April and continue to provide updates and share any additional information we may have after Spring Break.

We know this is not ideal and understand your frustrations. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

If you need assistance, we encourage you to call our hotline at (317) 387-2222 and leave a message.

Please continue to do everything you can to take care, be well, and look for the light in these challenging times. ❤️

This week was hard. We would like to thank you for your patience, your flexibility, and your support as we all took the first steps in what will be a long and change-filled process of figuring out how to care for ourselves and one another. It is normal to feel worried, uncertain, and even scared right now. Please do not add to any anxiety you may be feeling by expecting yourself or your new routine to be perfect. Right now, it is important to prioritize our physical and mental health and overall well-being. March 16, 2020 - 6:35 p.m.

Pike Family,

Today, national, state, and local leaders shared sobering news and advised much more extensive recommendations, which will impact all of our lives greatly. The most important consideration remains the health and safety of our students, our staff, and their families. For that reason, we are reassessing our plans on a daily and hourly basis.

We will continue our food service operations as follows:

Out of concern for the health of our families and our staff members food distribution will be handled via a curbside, drive through process.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17th, sack lunches will be available for pick up at the Pike Freshman Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This week and next week, our Red Zone Food Pantry will be open to all Pike families at the same location Monday thru Thursday from 11:00 to 2:00 p.m.

Wednesday, March 18th, packet pick up and meal services will be available at the Freshman Center and all Pike elementary and middle schools from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each child will be provided with five meals. Children who are enrolled at the Nathaniel Jones Early Learning Center can pick up meals at Eastbrook Elementary. PPA students may visit the PFC. Gleaners back packs will also be available at each elementary school.

If your child will not have reliable access to a device or internet service, please be sure to notify their teacher or school prior to 10 a.m. tomorrow so we can prepare a remote learning packet for them.

Although we had hoped to be able to allow our orchestra and band students into our buildings for a brief window on Wednesday to pick up their instruments, that is no longer feasible.

ELearning will begin on Thursday, March 19th. Your child’s teachers will be available to answer questions via email or Canvas from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m. from Thursday up until the first scheduled day of your child’s spring break.

If your child has forgotten their password, the following support will be available beginning Wednesday.

1.            Call 317-387-2525 and press 1 for students
2.            Leave a message with your name, ID number, and a return phone number

March 15, 2020 - 6:15 p.m.

If you are feeling overwhelmed right now, that is completely understandable. In uncertain times, the last thing anyone needs is more stress.

One of the best learning related things a child can do, now or ever, is read. Did you know that our students have free access to our collection of ebooks and audiobooks via a free app called Sora? You can get the app, visit the website www.soraapp.com, or access Sora through Pike Clever.

Check out Sora on Pike Clever or at www.soraapp.com

If you do not have reliable access to a device or the internet, we will be sharing information about a free book distribution next week.

Our teachers are hard at work planning learning experiences and our librarians are compiling a list of safe sites and resources for our students, which we will share. In the meantime, encourage your child to read, relax, and don’t feel like you need to add curriculum developer to your list of responsibilities. We are here for you.

Take care of yourself and call our hotline at (317) 387-2222 and leave message if you need support.

As a reminder, our current plans are as follows:

Monday, March 16th  –  11 AM -2 PM Sack lunches and Red Zone Food Pantry Open outside Pike Freshman Center

Tuesday, March 17th – 11 AM – 2 PM Sack lunches and Red Zone Food Pantry Open outside Pike Freshman Center

Wednesday, March 18th – 11 AM – 2 PM Packet pick up and meal services will be available at the Freshman Center and all Pike elementary and middle schools.
Each child will be provided with five meals. The Pike Food Pantry will also be open to families during this time.

Thursday, March 19th – eLearning Begins

March 14, 2020 - 2:15 p.m.

We have received several incredibly kind messages from people wanting to help our students and families. We are so grateful to our community for their outpouring of generosity and support.

Our Pike Red Zone Food Pantry provides food and supplies to Pike families throughout the year. They were able to provide food and necessary supplies to 27 families on Friday and will continue to do so in the coming days. The easiest way to help our Red Zone Food Pantry support our community at this time is to provide a monetary donation.

The Pike Township Educational Foundation is accepting donations via their website at https://pike-ef.org/. Please type Food Pantry in the comment section to earmark your donation.

Our counselors and social workers are available to talk and provide information regarding community resources. We encourage Pike families in need of support to call our hotline at (317) 387-2222 and leave a message.

As always, we are #PikeProud to serve our amazing community.

March 13, 2020 - 5:00 p.m.

Pike Families,

Based on how things stand as of right now, these are our plans. Please know that any and all of this could be subject to change as a result of guidance from the state or national level.

Sack lunch pick up will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pike Freshman Center on Monday, March 16th and Tuesday, March 17th. In order to give our staff ample time to prepare quality eLearning lessons, we will use waiver days for Monday – Wednesday, with eLearning beginning on Thursday, March 19th. During our scheduled eLearning Days, which will run from Thursday through the start of your child’s scheduled Spring Break, teachers will be available online for eLearning office hours from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Students may submit questions via email or Canvas. Digital resources can be found on our website.

If your child will not have reliable access to a device or the internet, please be sure to let their teacher or school know prior to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17th and we will prepare a learning packet for them.

On Wednesday, March 18th, packet pick up and meal services will be available at the Freshman Center and all Pike elementary and middle schools from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each child will be provided with five meals. The Pike Food Pantry will also be open to families during this time. Children who are enrolled at the Nathaniel Jones Early Learning Center can pick up meals at Eastbrook Elementary. Meal services will also be available the week of March 23rd and we will share those details next week.

We have set up an information hotline for families at (317) 387-2222. We encourage you to call for updates if you are unable to access our website and request support if needed.

We know that this closure is challenging and appreciate your patience as we work to develop and adapt plans in order to best serve our students and support all of our families.

March 12, 2020 - 8:30 p.m.

Pike Family,

As you know, based on guidance from the state and local health departments, our schools will be closed beginning tomorrow, Friday, March 13th. This includes Loving Care and our Nathaniel Jones Early Learning Center. Our top priority remains the health, safety, and well-being of our students, staff, and community.

Sack lunches and access to the Pike Red Zone Food Pantry will be available outside of the Pike Freshman Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow. A hotline has been set up for our families at (317) 387-2222.

If your child has medication in the nurse’s offices that you will need, please plan to pick it up during normal school hours tomorrow, Friday, March 13th.

Throughout the course of this closure, which is expected to continue through April 5th, we will utilize eLearning. This will help ensure learning is not disrupted during regularly scheduled school attendance days. If your child will not have reliable access to the internet and/or a digital device, please notify your child’s teacher via Canvas or email as soon as possible, or contact your child’s school no later than 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17th, and we will ensure that a learning packet is prepared for them.

We anticipate that eLearning will begin early next week. Please continue to monitor our website for updates.

Public School Districts of Marion County Staff & Families,

Under the direction of Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) and in collaboration with Mayor Hogsett’s office, the public school districts of Marion County will be closed March 13 - April 5, 2020 due to Coronavirus and in an overabundance of caution.

After closely monitoring the situation, consulting medical experts, and giving careful consideration to what is best for our students, staff, and the communities we serve, the determination has been made to close all public school districts in Marion County effective tomorrow, Friday, March 13.

Contingency plans will be put in place to ensure that meals and uninterrupted learning experiences will be available for our students.   Details and local decisions regarding meals and continued learning will be shared in the coming days by each school district.

You will receive direct communication from your district soon that will include additional information regarding what to expect, detailed logistics, and where to find important updates.

Although we know that this may cause challenges for our families, it is essential for us to prioritize health and safety by implementing our pandemic plans and doing everything we can to support our communities throughout this quickly evolving health emergency.

The measure to close schools is being implemented by MCPHD to slow the spread of the virus by social isolation and distancing.  For this reason, it is not encouraged that staff and students go out into public spaces frequently or large gatherings during the closure time.

All public school districts in Marion County will remain in close collaboration with MCPHD and appropriate health authorities during this closure.  We encourage staff and families to remain engaged by visiting www.MarionHealth.org and www.CDC.gov/COVID-19 .

If you have questions or concerns regarding the Coronavirus, please call the MCPHD Coronavirus Call Center at 317-221-5500 or contact your primary care physician.

Although there has only been one presumptive positive case of the coronavirus identified in Indiana at this time, we understand more are likely and are monitoring the situation closely. In the event that we become aware of an identified case within our school community, we will notify the staff, students, and families from the affected school(s). In the meantime, we will continue to work with and follow the guidance of local and national experts.

  • Our pandemic plan will be implemented immediately should become necessary.
  • In the event of school closures and/or cancelations, we will ensure that learning is not disrupted by conducting Digital Learning Days.
  • We will share any important news or updates via all of our communication channels (email, social media, website).

Please follow the CDC recommendations below to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
    • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
