The prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship (GMS) Program is a national initiative funded through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It provides scholarships and leadership development to increase the number of minority students completing undergraduate and graduate degree programs around the country.
The GMS program selects a cohort of 1,000 recipients in each academic school year. These scholarships provide full financial support throughout the completion of an undergraduate degree; and for those students who choose to study in one of the seven graduate disciplines: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science, the scholarship can continue through the pursuit of a doctoral degree. In addition, students are provided support beyond the scholarship dollars to assure that they have the mentorship, peer connections, and other resources to enhance the development of their leadership skills and to assure them every opportunity to attain their degrees. This scholarship award has an estimated value of $500,000.
The MSD Pike Township has been nationally recognized for the number of Gates Millennium Scholarship recipients from Pike High School over the past nine years. This highly selective scholarship reflects the level of academic rigor and college preparation received at Pike High School. The Pike High School Precollegiate Team along with state and national representatives from the United Negro College Fund has hosted annual workshops for counselors, parents, and students around the state to encourage scholars to apply for the scholarship.
